La zona o región abisal es un ambiente submarino, limitado por la zona pelágica, que comienza a partir de los 5000 metros de profundidad y se extiende hasta los 11000 metros correspondientes a las fosas oceánicas. Esta zona morfológica de la geografía del fondo marino ocupa un 3% del área total de los océanos. Se puede situar en cualquier punto entre los 2000 y los 5000 metros.
La fauna abisal está formada por peces extraños( pez abisal) con apariencia monstruosa como Argyropelecus, Idiacanthus, Melanocetus, Saccopharynx,…
