En lo más profundo del mar, hay una zona llamada “fosa Abisal“. El término abisal se refiere en biología y geología, a todo aquello que se encuentra a gran profundidad bajo la superficie del océano, donde no penetra la luz del sol y donde existe una fauna escasa y característica. La palabra abisal procede de abismo, lugar profundo y oscuro. Esta región se caracteriza por un ambiente frío, presión hidrostática extremadamente elevada, escasez de nutrientes y ausencia total de luz.Una fosa abisal se forma cuando la corteza oceanica subduce bajo la corteza continental con un leve angulo de inclinación lo que produce ruptura de la litosfera y la formación de una fosa.
En las profundidades del mar, se estima que hay muchas especies desconocidas debido a que las altas presiones existentes no permiten el acceso a máquinas exploradoras ya que no aguantarían tal fuerza y se romperían.
En el fondo oceánico no existe vegetación que realice la fotosíntesis, es decir no existen algas verdes.
La zona o región abisal es un ambiente submarino, limitado por la zona pelágica, que comienza a partir de los 5000 metros de profundidad y se extiende hasta los 11000 metros correspondientes a las fosas oceánicas. Esta zona morfológica de la geografía del fondo marino ocupa un 3% del área total de los océanos. Se puede situar en cualquier punto entre los 2000 y los 5000 metros.
La fauna abisal está formada por peces extraños( pez abisal) con apariencia monstruosa como Argyropelecus, Idiacanthus, Melanocetus, Saccopharynx,…
